Piston Pop Up-Things You Should Know

Following is some vital information that you will need to be aware of when the tech man inspects your piston pop-up. We always leave a margin but sometimes, the tech man can make a grave mistake.

1. Piston Top-Sometimes, carbon build up can cause a bad reading. Before you allow the tech man to check it, wipe the top of the piston clean with a clean, lint free towel soaked with WD 40. Than wipe clean again. This can be done as you are disassembling the head from the engine. Also, before the tech man inspects this area, push down on the piston as hard as you can while holding the flywheel.

2. Piston Top Part 2-If the first reading comes up false, make sure that the tech man has the flat bar stock centered on the piston. You can ask him to move the bar stock, turn it or relocate it and check it again. Have the bar stock checked with a dial caliper to make sure that it is flat.

3. Piston Top Part 3-If the reading comes up false, have the tech man try a different dial indicator. Have him wiggle the stem on the indicator to check the side to side travel on the indicator. If there is play, have him change the indicator.

4. Piston Pop Up-If the reading comes up false, have the tech man remove the coil from the engine. You can also ask him to drain the oil and compress the piston.

If the number still comes up false, protest it immediately.
